Competition Prep Checklist
Everything your dancer needs — from the costume to the emergency kit. Written by dance parents who've been there.
Every item links directly to pre-loved versions in the marketplace. Save money, reduce waste, be prepared.
Competition Costumes
The right costume can make all the difference. Have a backup ready — costumes get damaged, sizes change, and last-minute replacements are stressful.
- Main competition costume (fits perfectly, no loose sequins)
- Backup costume (same style or neutral alternative)
- Spare straps, hooks, or fasteners
- Costume bag or garment cover
Dance parents tip: Buy your backup costume at the start of the season, not the night before.
Dance Shoes
Worn-in shoes perform better than brand new ones. Always bring a backup pair — a broken heel or snapped strap on competition day is every parent's nightmare.
- Main competition shoes (worn in, not brand new)
- Backup pair (same style, same size)
- Shoe bag to protect soles
- Heel grips or insoles if needed
- Spare elastic or ribbon for ballet/pointe shoes
Dance parents tip: Pre-loved shoes are often better — they're already broken in and cost a fraction of new.
Hair Kit
Competition hair needs to stay put through every spin and jump. A well-stocked hair kit is non-negotiable.
- Bobby pins (lots — they always disappear)
- Kirby grips in your hair colour
- Strong-hold hairspray
- Hair nets (multiple colours)
- Gel or pomade for sleek styles
- Hairbands and scrunchies
- Comb and fine-tooth comb
- Bun maker or donut
Dance parents tip: Pack double what you think you need. Other parents will thank you.
Stage Makeup Kit
Stage lighting washes out natural features. Competition makeup needs to be bold enough to read from the back of the room.
- Foundation (one shade darker than usual)
- Bright eyeshadow palette
- Liquid eyeliner (black)
- Mascara (waterproof)
- False lashes and lash glue
- Blush and bronzer
- Bold lipstick
- Setting spray
- Makeup remover wipes
Dance parents tip: Test the full makeup look at home under bright lights before competition day.
Backup & Emergency Items
The items you hope you never need — but always do. Every experienced dance parent has a competition emergency kit.
- Safety pins (multiple sizes)
- Sewing kit with matching thread
- Fashion tape / double-sided tape
- Clear nail polish (stops runs and fraying)
- Spare tights (same colour, multiple pairs)
- Blister plasters and foot tape
- Pain relief (for tired feet and nerves)
- Snacks and water (for long competition days)
- Phone charger and portable battery
Dance parents tip: Keep a permanent competition bag packed and ready — just top it up before each event.
Practicewear & Warm-Ups
Dancers need to warm up properly before they compete. The right practicewear keeps muscles warm and prevents injuries.
- Warm-up tracksuit or hoodie
- Practice leotard or shorts
- Leg warmers
- Warm-up shoes or slippers
- Resistance bands for stretching
Dance parents tip: Pre-loved practicewear is perfect — it gets worn hard at competitions and grows out fast.
