Protecting Your Investment

Competition costumes can cost hundreds of pounds. Proper storage keeps them looking their best — and when the time comes to sell, a well-stored costume commands a significantly higher price.

The Golden Rules

Always clean before storing. Stage make-up, tan, and sweat will set into fabric over time. Have costumes professionally cleaned or hand-wash gently before putting them away.

Use a breathable garment bag. Avoid plastic bags — they trap moisture and can cause yellowing. A fabric garment cover lets the costume breathe.

Store flat or hanging. Heavy rhinestone costumes should be stored flat to prevent the weight of stones pulling on the fabric. Lighter costumes can hang.

Keep away from direct light. UV light fades colours over time. Store in a wardrobe or dark area.

Rhinestone Care

Check stones before storing. If any are loose, secure them with a tiny drop of fabric glue before putting the costume away. It's much easier to fix one loose stone now than to find a patch of missing stones next season.

The Payoff

A well-stored costume sells for significantly more than one that's been crumpled in a bag. Five minutes of care now is worth £20–£30 when you come to sell.
