Keeping Rhinestones Stage-Ready
Competition costumes covered in rhinestones and sequins are beautiful — but they need special care. Here's how to keep them looking their best.
Washing
Hand wash only. Machine washing will loosen rhinestones and damage sequins. Use cool water and a gentle detergent.
Turn inside out. This protects the embellishments during washing.
Never wring. Gently squeeze out excess water and lay flat to dry. Never hang a wet rhinestone costume — the weight of the water will pull stones loose.
Drying
Always dry flat on a clean towel. Keep away from direct heat and sunlight. Allow to dry completely before storing.
Repairs
Loose stones: Use E6000 or a specialist rhinestone glue. Apply a tiny drop to the setting, press the stone in, and allow to cure for 24 hours before wearing.
Missing stones: Take a photo of the costume and visit a craft or dance supply shop. Rhinestones come in standard sizes (SS6, SS10, SS16, SS20) — match the size and colour as closely as possible.
Before Selling
Always check every stone before listing. Replace any missing ones — it takes 10 minutes and can add £10–£20 to your selling price.
